Suggest Treatment For Cyst On The Tailbone
Have also recently had an external cyst on my tailbone that has shown up twice recently and bled - when i went to immediate care the first time, the doctor asked me a lot about my digestive system because she noticed tiny fissures around the area of the cyst.
Maybe am feeling a little more tired now than usual but nothing that I would be overly concerned about....
Purple prolly due to the food coloring. Clarifications please
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for your query.
I'm Dr. Shuba Hariprasad and will be answering your query today.
Would you clarify a few things for me, please?
*how long have you had the cyst? Is it in the anal area or above that on your tail bone area?
*does it hurt to touch? Or itchy?
*is it just blood or is there pus as well?
*do you travel sitting a lot? Or do any activity that causes friction over the area of the cyst?
*what treatment /investigations have you underfone for the cyst? What did they doctor say you had? Hemorrhoids or pilonidal cyst, for instance?
*do you have any history of stomach acidity like pain or heart burn? Any changes in stools (frequency and consistency)? Any bloating or discomfort after meals?
*did you pass stools today? Was it normal?
*do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
*any family history of hemorrhoids or gastrointestinal disease?
The purple vomit is probably due to the coloring used in the chocolate ice cream or the topping (if you had any). It probably didn't suit your stomach.
If you feel fine and there are no other symptoms them there is nothing to worry about.
I recommend :
-keep your food bland for 2 days.
-drink plenty of water.
-avoid carbonated, sugary & caffeinated beverages and spicy oily food for 2 days.
-if you develop any new symptoms such as abdominal pain, loose stools, persistent vomiting (more than twice in a day) , please get back to me.
Hope this helps. Please get back to me with the above requested clarifications so that I have a better understanding of what's going on.
I'd be happy to help you with any further queries you may have.
Wish you good health.
Regards,
Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
*how long have you had the cyst? Is it in the anal area or above that on your tail bone area?
- I have had minor pain there before but never had it checked out until about 2 or so months ago when it came back so bad that I could hardly sit down. Then it started to bleed pretty bad so I went to immediate care. She just called it a cyst - I don't recall her telling me what type but she gave me antibiotics and it continued to discharge until it didn't hurt any more.
It came back about a week ago - not very severely and pretty much started to release bloody stuff as soon as it began to hurt. It is inside of the very top of my buttcrack
*does it hurt to touch? Or itchy?
- both - mostly hurt but sometimes itchy
*is it just blood or is there pus as well?
- both - it tends to be a watery looking blood, depending on the severity of the bleeding so you can tell its both.
*do you travel sitting a lot? Or do any activity that causes friction over the area of the cyst?
- I do a full time office job which is mostly sitting
*what treatment /investigations have you undergone for the cyst? What did they doctor say you had? Hemorrhoids or pilonidal cyst, for instance?
- I answered this question above
*do you have any history of stomach acidity like pain or heart burn? Any changes in stools (frequency and consistency)? Any bloating or discomfort after meals?
- Yes actually - last week i had a lot of heartburn and stomach pain - only alkaseltzer would fix it - I have had this before - in fact it isn't terribly uncommon. I have to lay down on my stomach sometimes it gets so bad...
*did you pass stools today? Was it normal?
- yes i did today and it was normal - and i kept track of it a lot last week - I had a lot more bowel movement that usual but it was all normal
*do you have any other medical issues or take any medications?
- no I only take 1 iron pill and 2 natural resveratrol (with red wine extract, green tea and grape seed) every day. The resveratrol does wonders for my acne and I take the iron because I have heard many women have a lack of it and I was feeling tired a lot. I don't know if it really makes much of difference but I think my tiredness isn't too much more than average....
*any family history of hemorrhoids or gastrointestinal disease?
My dad is lactose intolerant in after a certain time in the morning....
No we don't have any history of the two you mentioned though...
The purple vomit is probably due to the coloring used in the chocolate ice cream or the topping (if you had any). It probably didn't suit your stomach.

- I have never had a problem with ice cream before and I had no toppings on my ice cream - not disagreeing with you - just stating...
I think I am equally worried about the fact that it came on so fast and then went away so fast. Literally I had no more than 5 minutes warning and I felt perfect 15 min after.
Pilonidal cyst, gastritis
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for the clarifications and follow up.
I must say that I appreciate such a thorough and detailed response.
Regarding the cyst:
-I believe you have a pilonidal cyst. This is when the hair follicles in that area get infected and forms a cyst that can become chronic.
It may sometime develop into a sinus (a tubular tract) that can increase the area of the infection, which in turn leads to additional draining points away from the initial source.
If this happens or if the cyst recurs more than thrice a year and enlarges, it needs to be removed surgically.
Else certain precautions on your part will help keep it at bay.
I recommend :
- don't sit for more than a half hour at a stretch. Get up, take a quick walk around the block or do some stretches in your cubicle or rest area, visit a colleague at a nearby cubicle or just stand and walk for a couple of minutes every half hour.
-keep area clean and dry with soap and water.
- Change underclothes regularly if it gets damp.
-avoid shaving /waxing over the area.
-avoid synthetics and use cotton clothes over the area. I
-if you travel sitting, use a folded cotton cloth over the area to avoid friction and absorb sweat. Remove this as soon as you reach office.
-apply antibacterial ointment at the first sign of Infection (redness, pain, drainage).
-use alum crystal after bath. This is an antiseptic. Check on a small area of inner arm for allergies before usingnon back. (the wound should be healed and closed. If raw and open, do not use)
Regarding stomach problem:
-I believe you have gastritis /ulcer
Your symptoms suggest an imbalance in stomach acidity. The severity could be due to an ulcer.
An ulcer can bleed and may result in vomiting a dark brown or red blood. Purple seems unlikely.
I recommend :
-a physician consult, gastroenterologist opinion
-treat with Proton pump inhibitors (like pantoprazole) for a week (twice a day), then once a day at night for another 10 days.
If your symptoms are relieved, then it's gastritis.
-if symptoms come back or do they go away, you need an endoscopy to check for ulcers and h. Pylori infection. Reflux disease must be ruled out as well.
-avoid caffeine on and empty stomach
-avoid spicy, oily and carbonated, sugary drinks
-eat more frequently (every 2-3 hrs) but smaller meals. Have healthy snacks like fruits, sprouts.
-make sure you chew food thoroughly.
-don't have fruit within an hour of a main meal.
-limit chocolates.
-eat only until your stomach is 3/4th full. Don't fill it.
-don't lie down for 2 hours after a main meal. Have dinner by 8,if you go to bed at 10. Can have milk or fruit of hungry before bed.
-avoid citric fruits when you have these symptoms.
These should help you.
Hope I've been of help. Please let me know of you any further queries. I'd be happy to help.
Wish you good health.

Dr. Shuba Hariprasad
