Suggest Treatment For Diarrhea
from a problem in the past with diarreah? I am almost out and it seems to help
me. I bought some imodium last night and that did not work at all. I was very
stressed last week and ate lots of popcorn one & half bags that I bought at the grocery. My husband
said maybe too much fiber and very stressed this holiday. Also, sampled some
food when out along with lot of chips When taking the Lomotil it keeps me settled down and when it wears off
I have the sudden urge of gas coming on and than watery stools right after. I am drinking
pedilyte to hopefully not get dehydrated. The one little pill of Lomotil keeps me ok for 12 hrs -24 hrs.
It has been about three and half days and would like some more lomotil to get thru Christmas! I am
very stressed with all this and may chill out after Christmas but now I only have one or two pills left
and would like to get thru Christmas. Can you be of help?
Take appropriate symtpomatic treatment.
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for asking on HCM.
I have read your query and understand the problem of diarrhea since 3 and half days.
As per the facts you posted here, you might be having gastroenteritis (mostly viral or sometimes bacterial) or irritable bowel because of which you are having frequent watery motions since more than 3 days.
Lomotil is good drug for diarrhea but it helps to reduce the number of bowel movements by slowing down intestinal motility and will not be helpful to replenish normal gut bacterial flora. So,I will not advise you to take it further if I would have your treating doctor.
Therefore,in my advise you should start below mentioned treatment.
1) Start taking probiotics (like lactic acid bacillus-double strength tablets) three to four times daily with Econorm sachets three times daily (to take 1 XXXXXXX with full glass of water) to restore the normal bacterial flora which are available over the counter at nearby pharmacy.
2) Take lots of fluids and fruit juices throughout the day which will be helpful to avoid fluid-electrolytes imbalance along with pedilyte which you are already taking.
You can also take sachets of WHO Oral Rehydration Salts mixed with water to maintain electrolyte balance.
3) No oily or spicy foods.Take pantoprazole 40 mg twice daily as you have gas trouble.
4) If immodium (loperamide) is not helpful then I will not recommend it further.
5) Antibiotics (Norfloxacin-Tinidazole combination) can also be taken for a shorter course (like 3 days) but for that you will require prescription from some local doctor or GP.
We would expect that you will start to improve within 2 to 3 days or may be earlier with this treatment and you will feel better.
Hope this helps and let me know if you have more doubts.
