Brief Answer:
Due to decreased pumping action of your heart

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Welcome and thanks for your query.
I understand your concern.
In dilated cardiomyopathy the pumping action of the heart is decreased and there can be congestion in the lungs impairing the Oxygen trasfer into the blood. This produces the 'air hunger ' on waking up and make you hyperventilate. This hyperventilation is different from the one produced by anxiety. Therefore anxiety medicines don't help much.
Anxiety can produce hyperventilation and both reasons can add up making the breathing very fast and may produce side effects like carpopedal spasm.
You should contact your cardiologist and adjust your medicines. In the meantime, reducing the salt and fluid intake, sleeping in a semi reclined posture with your head elevated and use of diuretic would help relieve the symptoms.
