Suggest Treatment For Diverticulitis

Question: I have had bouts of diverticulosis/itis. I have had some of my bowel out (they said it was diseased). A recent colonoscopy didn't show anything other than some redness and a bit of swelling. I am being booked for an abdominal angiogram. What would they be looking for and is it given under sedation?

Brief Answer:
This is to know on the status of vessels supplying your bowel.

Detailed Answer:
Hi XXXX ! Good morning. I am Dr Shareef, a general surgeon answering your query.

Possibly the redness and swelling of the part of intestine found during the colonoscopy for recurrent bouts of abdominal pain prompted your treating doctor to rule out an important cause for this kind of inflammation of the mucosa, that is the narrowing of the mesenteric artery supplying the bowel. This might occur due to several reasons, diverticulitis being one of those. The diagnosis of this condition could be made with an abdominal angiogram.

An abdominal angiogram is a kind of x- ray performed simultaneously with injection of a radio opaque XXXXXXX in an artery, preferably the femoral artery which is easy to locate. Although sedation is not a must, some may need it to alleviate the anxiety factor. Your doctor might advise you for a short stay in the hospital after the procedure for observation, otherwise it usually is an OPD procedure. You might also be required to undergo for some basic blood tests like a CBC, a bloos sugar, blood urea, serum creatinine, serum uric acid, and a clotting profile before this procedure.

The management of other problem like the hernia remains unchanged and is not related to this investigation. You could also continue with your present medications as indicated in your medical record.

I hope I have answered your query and I hope this information would help you in discussing with your family physician/treating doctor in further management of your problem. Please do not hesitate to ask in case of any further doubts.

Thanks for choosing health care magic to clear doubts on your health problems. I wish you an early recovery. Dr Shareef.
