Posted on Wed, 27 Dec 2017
Question: I I am suffering now from diverticulitis flare up. I also have fatty liver disease, which worries me. This week I've seen my MD who specializes in colon surgery. About a year ago I went through the worst pain ever. Seriously I never want to suffer that again! I have CIC. I take amitiza and lactulose but still have horrible bloating, my belly swells like a 9 month pregnancy........so, yesterday I didn't want to injest anything, and today as well. Usually I eat high grain and seed bread. But, was told to avoid anything that will get trapped in
A pouch. So, today I've eaten applesauce, English muffin with butter and that's all. Even drinking water is a problem..........please give me immediate advice about this pain and low fever.

Brief Answer:
Constipation advises; diverticulitis is inflammation and you will need to see your doctor if fever with the pain.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thank you for asking at healthcaremagic.
I carefully read your questions and understand your concern.

1. General information and advises on constipation:
Constipation sometimes can be very problematic to the patients and having to use drugs regularly also is bothersome especially because sometimes even with drugs patients do not get full relief.

You seem to be using proper drugs to help with constipation. Are you having a bowel movement in 1-2 days? Do you feel fully emptied after passing stools? Do you have easy bowel movement?
If not than your constipation is not well controlled and you might need some more treatment.

A good natural treatment for constipation is extra fiber like psillium (metamucil) one to two doses a day. Fiber helps with the stools to be softened and easily move in the bowel. Having fruit and vegetable in the diet is also important. As i read you don't mention much of these and might benefit from adding those in your daily diet (plums and pears are very rich in fiber also).

it is very important to try these as they are very helpful in most patients and do not cause side effects as they stay in the bowel and are not absorbed. There are few other strong laxatives (drugs that help with constipation like bisacodyl) but we don't recommend regular use of those due to dependence they cause. These can be taken very rarely, once in a week in case you are really struggling.

Drink well, do some exercise, be active, have a healthy BMI (weight compared to height)- it is believed that these might help with the bowel habits.

To reduce bloating try to avoid table sugar, and sweetened food, sparkling drinks and spicy food. If you have stomach irritation and discomfort than treatment to reduce acid might be of help (omeprazole).

2. more specific on Diverticulitis.
Diverticulitis is due to inflammation of diverticulosis which happens as a complication of constipation and if you are having pain and fever than you will need to see your doctor. Sometimes they might need to give you antibiotics to help with it and prevent you from eating or drinking anything for a while (this is done in hospital while they give you iv fluids) and rarely if this doesn't help they have to intervene and do surgery.
It is very important to have the proper examinations if fever is building up so that you prevent side effects of diverticulitis.

I hope this is helpful and answers to your questions but please feel free to reply if anymore clarification is needed on this.

Kind regards,

Antoneta Zotaj, MD
