Posted on Mon, 9 Feb 2015
Question: My son has tubes in ears and has the flu currently was running 105 temp and was able to get temp down to 100-102 for past day , ears seem to be bothering him ! ER said ears looked good, but after bath he was screaming and when I cleaned his ears I noticed slight amount of XXXXXXX red blood on both ends of qtip from right ear! Possible eardrum perforation ? Tube dislodged? Inflammation? Please help I do not want permanent hearing loss to be the issue!! Does he need to be seen by his primary doctor or his ENT doctor ?

Brief Answer:
ent consultation, tepid sponging and syrup paracetamol

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that your son is having fever with bleeding per ear.
As per your clinical details, it appears to be otitis media secondary to fever with cold.
Bleeding on q tip, does not confirms tube dis-lodgement or perforation.

I suggest you to consult ent surgeon, get detailed ent examination, otoscopy ( to confirm presence of tube, to measure ear drum damage). He also requires antibiotics for his high raising temperature. Depending on the examination reports further treatment is required accordingly.

Meantime, give him paracetamol syrup (as per your treating doctor) to prevent febrile fits. Do tepid sponging. Avoid self cleaning and water per ear during bath (plug it with dry cotton). Do not give him freezer products (curd/ice cream causes cold, infection can pass through Eustachian tube to ear drum).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Brief Answer:
paracetamol,every 6th hourly.

Detailed Answer:

Hello again,

Thanks for considering my answer and for your follow up.

First control his fever, continue same paracetamol every 6th hourly in case of high temperature.

Yes, you can visit ent surgeon Monday morning for evaluation and suitable treatment for fever and ear infection.

Meanwhile, just plug with dry cotton to stop active bleeding.

Hope, I have answered your query.

Take care.
