Question: female, 54 yrs old grossly elevated liver enzymes, minimal pain, slight nausea, no appetite. all tests except liver enzymes are normal...has had CTscan, MRI, and liver biopsy do not show cause of problem. no stones in ducts or gallbladder. ( a kidney stone was noted ) gastro. specialists are puzzled.... some lab work is still not back yet but ??? viral disease and auto immune disease seem to be ruled out but auto immune problems are in the family. she does not take any prescriptions and rarely takes nsaids....she took over the counter Tumeric caps for a week or so in Sept. no drugs ever used....social drinker.. lives in a new condo...uses XXXXXXX on her hair. doctors are stumped , can you think of anything?

Brief Answer:
As mention below

Detailed Answer:
Hello dear
Welcome to HCM and thanks for the query
I understand your concern

Since how long do you have problem?

It could be a
1. Autoimmune liver disease in subclinical phase (like autoimmune hepatitis, sclerosing cholangitis)
It will occur mostly in female, mostly asymptomatic or mild symptoms with elevated liver enzymes

2. Early phase of the infective hepatitis

3. Side effect of the turmeric capsule.
Turmeric capsule also cause increased liver function test, nausea like symptoms.

I would suggest to undergo following investigations:
Auto antibodies test: anti-nuclear antibody (ANA), smooth muscle antibody (SMA), and atypical perinuclear antineutrophil cytoplasmic antibody (p-ANCA) to rule out the autoimmune disease as history in the family.
Blood tests for viral antigens: hepatitis B surface or core antigen
Anti-viral antibodies: anti-hepatitis B surface antibody or anti-hepatitis A antibody
Viral DNA/RNA by PCR.
Meanwhile take symptomatic treatment:
Tablet acetaminophen for the pain
Tablet pantoprazole plus domeperidone, 30 minutes before the meal
Drink plenty of water and take proper rest.

Hope I have answered your query
Let me know if you have further query
