Suggest Treatment For Esophagitis, Gastritis And Hernia
Question: Hi. I had an upper endoscopy on Tuesday. They found moderate severe esophogitis, moderate gastritis and a hiatal hernia. I am confused as to what could be going on with me. I am worried this could be Barrets esophogus. How high are the chances
Brief Answer:
Not Barrets if it was not visible on endoscopy
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
The description in the endoscopy report does not suggest Barrett's esophagus. if Barrets was there of would have been clearly mentioned in the report.Barretts is an endosxopic diagnosis which os confirmed by biopsy.if there is no Barrett's mucosa visible on endoscopy then you do not have it. So I wouldn't worry about Barrett's.
The report suggests GERD. increasing the dose of Nexium would help.

I was wondering if I should get surgery to repair my Hiatal Hernia and continue my weightlifting program that I have been doing since I was in college because of the hernia. Thank you for your help.
Brief Answer:
Surgery only if large hernia and symptoms do not respond to meds
Detailed Answer:
Hello,
I would suggest for a hiatus hernia repair surgery only if the hiatus hernia is large and the symptoms are not controlled on medications. The hernia repair will help with reflux symptoms and not with the abdominal bloating and discomfort
