Suggest Treatment For Fever And Headaches
Question: My 14 year old son is experiencing a fever since Dec. 26. He sleeps almost constantly. He has a headache. He is complaining of slightly blurry vision (he has glasses but doesn't usually wear them), has a fever, headache and extreme fatigue. He has been to th ER and family doctor. He tested negative for influenza a and b, RSV and a had a negative Monospot rapid mono test. He also had a CT scan of his head and blood work, all negative ( on Dec. 28). Without Tylenol, his fever continues to go up about a degree higher every night, than the night before. Ex. Tues. 101.6, Wed. 102.2. Meningitis has been ruled out by the family doctor....no stiff neck, vomiting...just fever, headache and extreme fatigue, slightly blurry vision for 5 days, now. I have been told by the family doctor that this is viral and will have to run it's course. I am concerned because he is so tired, always sleeping and his fever is ticking up higher every night. Is something being missed? I have a script for repeat CBC, mono and Lyme for Friday.

Child presenting with High fever, headache, blurry vision and lethargy possibility of Meningitis should be considered. As it has been ruled out by thorough clinical investigation , detailed investigation its unlikely to be something serious.
Non specific viral fever usually present with extreme fatigue and pain. So going by description its likely to be non specific viral fever. Apart from all the investigation , I would also suggest to get urine examination done, to rule out urinary tract infection. Do add this to the list of investigation to be done on Friday. Also Fundoscopic examination by Opthalmologist is needed in view of presence of blurring of vision.

Non specific viral fever could present in similar way. before labelling it as non specific viral fever, it is important to rule out other causes especially in view of rising fever pattern.
I would also suggest you to get Peripheral smear examination done while getting CBC done. Also do repeat Urine examination , as one single negative test does not rule it out completely.
If the fever still continues to be high , he will require further workup.
