Suggest Treatment For Fever, Diarrhea, Nausea And Vomiting

Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: 11 days ago I came down with what I thought was viral gastroenteritis. Fever, diarreha, nausea but very little vomiting. It is now 11 days later and I still am having watery stools. No normal stools. I drank a 1.5 bottles of Pepto Bismol to no avail. My stools began to firm a little then today I'm back to water. I made potato broth, have eaten rice and quinoa and eliminated dairy and have not had any gluten for months. Can you help?

Brief Answer:
This could be secretory diarrhoea or gut infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello ma'am
I share your concern
Water stools can be related to gut infection or secretory diarrhoea
I would like further information to guide you better like
Is it associated with pain in abdomen or gurgling sounds before motion?
are you diabetic?
Since it is recurring after 15 days I would advise you to consult your doctor for battery of tests like blood for hemoglobin, CBC, Liver function test, an ultrasound abdomen and a stool test for ova, cysts or protozoa

Meanwhile please consider these guidelines
1. Have lots of fluids including ORS to counter dehydration and electrolytic imbalances
2. Have dietary fibers, fresh fruits and vegetables
3. Maintain good hygiene wash your hands with antiseptic soap or solutions every time you eat or drink
4. You can have probiotics to strengthen the healthy germs of intestine.
5. You should have curd Yoghurt or banana in your diet if you don't have lactose intolerance

If it persists or worsens, visit your doctor for a course of antibiotics.

Hope this helps you

Thank You. What is secretory diarrhea? No I am not a diabetic. I had pain in the abdomen when this first started and for 5 days after. Now I have no pain. Yes, my stomach gurgles a few minutes before I have to have a bowel movement. I will continue with your recommendations for a few more days and hopefully the diarrhea will subside.

Brief Answer:
This could be an intestinal infection

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for your reply
Secretary diarrhoea is caused by toxins produced by various pathogenic bacteria
Pain abdomen with gurgling sound is suggestive of an intestinal infection
You may require a course of antibiotics (ofloxacin plus ornidazole) under supervision of your doctor, if it doesn't subside with symptomatic treatment and all dietary precautions

Hope this answers your question
Thanks and regards
