Suggest Treatment For Fever, Nausea And Vomiting

Posted on Mon, 1 Jun 2015
Question: Is it possible for child to develop stomach-virus like symptoms (fever, nausea, vomiting) due to infected dog bite? I took her to the doctor yesterday and they felt it was a simple stomach virus, and to keep her hydrated, but I forgot entirely to mention the dog bite. Our little 3 month old puppy cut her toe quite badly last week while playing, and we applied polysporin and it began to heal. It currently looks slightly black and potentially infected, so I am wondering if there could be any possible connection between the two.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

I read carefully your query and I can understand your concern.

Most likely these symptoms are not related to the dog scratch but I would need to ask you some more questions:
-In what numbers stays her body temperature and can normal antipyretics like Tylenol control the fever?
-Is the dog vaccinated ?
-Can you please send a picture of her toe to evaluate the grade of infection?

A infection everywhere in the body can cause systemic symptoms like fever, nausea and vomiting but this happens if the infection is severe. It is very unlikely for a slight inflammation of a scratch to cause systemic symptoms.
So I would need to have a look at her affected toe, just to be safe.

Waiting for your answer.

Thanks. I think I uploaded the picture. I don't think it can be connected as the wound on her toe looks fairly superficial.
-Her temperature was high yesterday morning (102F) but came down quickly with tylenol - back to 97F. Today it has been around 97-98F all day and she has not had any antipyretics today.
-The dog is up to date in her vaccinations
-Picture was uploaded.

It sounds like it is just a normal stomach virus - she appears to be improving nicely today, but I just wanted to make sure that there is no connection here.

Thank you so much! XXXXXXX XXXXXXX

Brief Answer:
nothing of concern.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.

Thank you for the information and the picture.

No,there is no way that her symptoms are related to the wound in her toe.
It doesn't seem to be infected. You should continue to keep it clean and apply neosporin.
It seems to be just a viral infection that will go away in few days.
You can try to relax, it is nothing of concern.

Hope it help.

Kind regards,
Dr.Rovena
