Suggest Treatment For Fibrocystic Breast Disease

Question: I am a 38 yr female. Until last year Oct everything was fine when suddenly I missed my periods. Not pregnant. There was PCO and I was prescribed iron tabs since I was little anemic as well. The iron tabs were too strong for me that I ended up with Acid reflux - had a endoscopy which showed mild inflammation of last portion of esophagus and antrum. So I was put on PPIs. But within a month I started with Galactorrhea. Prolactin touched 70 when I had to discontinue the PPIs...Prolactin returned back to normal. I was asked to repeat Prolactin test which is due this month. I lost around 10 kgs in the last year due to my bland diet and my periods are now regular...

My present problem is that I find pricking sensation and tenderness in and around the breast - mostly left but sometimes both..the pain seems circulating from one point to other. Also the arm pits. I cant find mass or lump but something beady everywhere. Now the pain is on my infraclavicular position or may be near that, I am not sure and also in arm pits. When I had galactorrhea I had my mammogram done and it came out normal. This was in Nov 2013. I am actually scared because the area in question is breasts, armpit and around them.

Please let me know if I could get an understanding of what is happening to me.

Brief Answer:
SOUNDS LIKE FIBROCYSTIC BREAST DISEASE

Detailed Answer:
Hello
Thanks for writing to us with your health concern.

Your last mammogram was less than a year back. Was it completely normal, or did it mention any fibrocystic changes? Your symptoms fit in with a condition called Fibrocystic Breast Disease. There is no discrete mass or lump as such, but a generalized beady and lumpy texture all through the breast. ALso, there might be vague pain and tenderness around the breast and armpits.

This is NOT something alarming.

It is indicative of over proliferation of normal breast tissue due to hormonal changes (could be due to PCO, galactorrhoea or other reasons like stress, weight fluctuations, late nights, etc).

You should have a clinical breast exam and a repeat mammogram along with a breast sonogram.
This would pick up the diagnosis. The accompanying pain is easily managed with daily supplements of Vitamin E and Evening Primrose oil capsules.

Do not worry, as this is a normal hormonal variant, that many women have, and is not at all ominous.

All the best

Thank you so much doctor for the detailed answer. I feel a little relaxed. I will follow your advice. The mammogram last was completely normal with no mention of fibrocystic condition. My mom has a fibrocystic condition of breast. I think like you mentioned I will follow up with another mammogram and sonogram.

Thanks again
