Suggest Treatment For Filariasis And BP Fluctuations
I have been advised by doctors that there is no cure to this ugly disease. Is some relief available in surgery? Or has any new development taken place?
Filariasis
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
It seems that you have filarial elephantiasis.
Medical treatments for lymphatic filariasis -albendazole with ivermectin can be used to treat the disease
Alternatively albendazole is used with diethylcarbamazine.
Also a 6-week course of doxycycline has been shown to provide improvement in filarial lymphedema irrespective of disease activity.
As such no Blood pressure controlling medicine has any effect on filariasis/elephantiasis and there is no specific recommendation of any particular anti-hypertensive drug in patient with filariasis and hypertension.
There have been a variety of surgical procedures devised for the treatment of lymphedema/filarial elephantiasis. Surgical treatment involves either excision of extra tissue or anastomoses of a lymphatic vessel to another lymphatic or vein. With excisional procedures, part or all of the edematous tissue is removed. This does not improve lymphatic drainage, but debulks redundant tissue.
The microsurgical procedures involve the creation of a lymphaticolymphatic or lymphaticovenous anastomosis, which theoretically improves lymphatic drainage. There are no long-term follow-up data available for these interventions, and therefore operative therapy for lymphedema is not well-accepted worldwide. Furthermore, operative intervention can further obliterate lymphatic channels, worsening the edema.
It will be helpful to answer queries if you give more details about your problem.

Lymphatic filariasis
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thank you for your query. I can understand your concerns.
As such there is no specific diet for lymphatic filariasis but fatty foods are restricted in individuals with proven chyluria (milky urine) that is associated with lymphatic filariasis.
Probiotics are beneficial bacteria and supplementation with Lactobacillus GG/Fermented milk (yogurt ) may reduce infections .
Additional measures to improve lymphatic fluid flow such as elevating and massaging swollen limbs and good hygiene of the affected limbs is necessary to further reduce swelling and prevent further infection with bacteria or fungi.
Foot hygiene, foot care and physical exercise is recommended.
Good hygiene and treatment of entry leisions are important measures for managing lymphoedema. Practise skin care and hygine and use proper footwear.
