Question: Hi, my name is XXXX, I am 67 yrs.old. I am having frequent uti. I just had my blood work done, I had high on my sodium which was144,also chloride was 110,and ast/sgot is 87 and plt 122. I have been doing a lot of lifting and this is when I start having problems with my kidneys. My right side will get real sore and I urinate often. If I don't go the minute I feel it coming on I am in unbearable pain until I relieve myself. It feels like I am swollen inside and hard to get urine through, a small stream only and my side feels like kidney is swollen and sticking out some. Once I could not go at all and went to er and had to put catheter in to get relief. The pain was worse than child birth. The nurse had to try 3 times before could get catheter in. Im going to Dr.next week and see what is wrong. This only effects my right kidney. Also I forgot to mention that my glucose is 108,hdl 33 and triglycerides are 161. I want to know what your opinion is, my bp is 140/80 and I am taking cipro. I hope u can understand this. Thanks, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Can try drugs like Flomax

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
What you have described is a very tricky problem. Recurrent UTIs are not uncommon, and can be caused by no reason other than an in-born tendency to have bacteria stick to inside of bladder, but thus can be complicated by issues such as a bladder outlet obstruction which is what you seem to have.

If there is a mechanical obstruction, it should be easy to take care of by a simple urethral dilatation and regular urethral calibration thereafter, but if there's a functional obstruction, drugs like FLOMAX(TAMSULOSIN) could help. They however work better in males than in females. There are other drugs called Anticholinergics which however have the risk of causing complete retention if urine in an attempt to reduce the severe pain that you have due to bladder contractions. CIPROFLOXACIN is a very good antibiotic in this regard, but future use might have to be dictated by means of urine culture and sensitivity.

Even after you have cleared the infection, it might be a good idea to Check with your Urologist(as all of these are prescription based Drugs only) when you meet next week to get him to prescribe a drug at a low dose for a longer duration like 3 months, which should help prevent relapse.

Hope I have been able to help you.
