Brief Answer:
Depends on the cause.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for trusting us with your health concern.
The need of surgery in knock knee depends on the degree of deviation and the cause of knock knees. if it is due to vitamin D deficiency then proper supplements and braces can help. if it is due to arthritis then you may benefit from wearing leg braces or special insoles to reduce the strain on their knees.
if it is causing knee pain, a limp or difficulty walking only then surgery is considered - if all the conservative treatments fail. Osteotomy is considered in adults only when it is worsening or causing symptoms.
Open wedge surgery is better but that depends on your orthopedician. Do consult one for proper X-rays and evaluation.
