Suggest Treatment For Headache And Eye Pain In An Elderly
Question: XXXXXXX is/was a robust hard working and healthy 96 year old until he he got a cold 7 weeks ago, didn't stop working and came down with shingles - trigeminal nerve affected - and is now suffering from terrible headaches, and pain in the eye. The medications he's on are: Lyrica 150mg bd, Aciclovir (acihexal)800mg bd, targin (naloxonehydrochloride dihydrate 2.5 mg bd and prednisolone eye drops every two hours when awake. pain management is what we are desperate for.
we have been alternating hot and cold packs to his head and eye.
pain averages 7 on a scale of 1 to 10
pain is diabolically worse at night and he gets very little sleep.
the pain comes and goes at different points and is like needles.
the affected eye he keeps closed.

The current pain management appears right. He should have local eye care, oral pain killers including NSAIDs and opoids in incremental doses. If they do not help to cure the pain the very low dose Carbamazepine is what I think of.
