Suggest Treatment For Heaviness And Soreness In Enlarged Thyroid

Question: So after all my worries. I have found out that the left side if my thyroid is too large and needs to come out. No cancer just a nodule and an enlargement. My question is sometimes, most of the times it doesn't bother me. Buy other times it feels heavy and im sore. Is there any reason this happens?? Am I doing something to upset it??

Thanks for posting the query.

Enlarged thyroid gland can compress over the surrounding structures leading to various symptoms. Even though solitary nodule does not pose any risk of cancer but, if the size is more than 2 cm, it has to be removed.

Soreness in the gland is because of bleeding inside the follicles, following which it balloons up and exerts pressure on the surrounding follicles. The septa of surrounding follicles also rupture because of the increased pressure and the bleeding thus goes on to spread. When the follicles are quiescent without any bleed, you will not have any symptoms.

If the gland is prominent enough, then it has to be removed.
