Brief Answer:
Divarfication of Recti as per your description.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query, albeit short and specific.
To recapitulate: Male/78 - hernia that goes from belly button to the chest - visited a Doctor - forgot the name - said to consult a Surgeon - wants to know further...

This is called Divarication of Recti.
This is the gap between the two rectus muscles that run parallel from the lower bony cage to the pubic symphysis. When one is young, active and energetic these two are held together with strong fibrous structure in mid-line and may get loose and weak over time to give divarication.
Strictly speaking, this is not a hernia at all by definition.

Needs no surgery.
Exercises where one contracts these muscles like lifting the head and legs in lying down position can correct this defect to a certain level.

I hope this answers your query.
True mid-line hernia opening is never this large.
Please feel free to ask for further relevant queries if you feel that there is a gap of communication.
