Suggest Treatment For High BP And Dehydration

Posted on Tue, 10 Jan 2017
Question: I quit smoking and drinking the first of October 2016. Since then I have felt extremely dehydrated. My hands, feet, and face feel rough. My hands look wrinkly. I presently take Lisinopril/HCTZ for high blood pressure. Could the cessation of drinking and smoking affect hydration levels? P.S. I drink about 6-8 cups of water daily, plus coffee etc. I am 62, take Lisinopril/HCTZ, Metformin, Allopurinol, Synthroid and Prevacid. As of last doctor's visit in September 2016 all conditions were under control.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for asking on HCM!

I carefully passed through your question and would explain that your skin changes are not related to quiting smoking and drinking.

You should know that cessation of smoking and drinking does not affect hydration levels.

In fact cessation of smoking can help improve the skin vascularization and hydration.

From the other hand the amount of fluids that your are taking is appropriate to avoid dehydration.

But, I would recommend consulting with your doctor and performing some other tests:

- vitamin D levels
- vitamin B1 and B12 plasma levels
- blood electrolytes
- thyroid hormone levels
- HbA1C and fasting glucose.

Meanwhile, I would recommend continuing on a good hydration and use a balanced diet, including a lot of fresh fruits and vegetables, which are rich in vitamin C and vitamin B.

Hope you will find this answer helpful!

Kind regards,

Dr. Iliri
