Question: My son was prescribed focalin xr for adhd. when taking it to the pharmacy they filled adderall. we didnt realize until a week after he was on it. he missed a dosage and started chewing on his cheeks, couldnt sit still, and was constantley moving around like he didnt know what he was doing. he has been off it for about a week or two they just changed it back to focalin. now he is taking things to bed that he shouldnt, making comments about his little brother saying he wants to hurt him, which he hasnt done before and lieing alot more. he is still all over the place which he never did when he was on the focalin before. could this be because he is no longer on the adderall? he is only 8 years old

Brief Answer:
Consultation

Detailed Answer:
Hello, and thanks for your question.

This is almost certainly due to the Adderall. At his age a sudden unintended switch to Adderall causes hyperactivity, irritability, and insomnia. It will take a couple weeks for the effects of this error to reverse themselves in the body. I would be in close contact with his doctor to report these symptoms -- it may be that for a while he needs a lower dose than normal of Focalin while the Adderall effects are wearing off. Rest assured -- he will go back to normal. This is just temporary.
