Suggest Treatment For Inner Arm Lump
Question: I have a lump the size of a 50 piece on my inner arm 2.5 inches above my wrist. There is some swelling in the arm above the lump. An 18 gauge needle inserted by a PA 1/2 inch drew out nothing except a tiny bit of dried, black blood. The ER MD subsequently cut the lump open and again got nothing but a tiny bit of dried black blood. There seems to be neurologic involvement, as my thumb and thumb socket are either numb or tingling, and I have frequent muscle spasms where my thumb locks up (3-4 times a day) then gradually subsides. The ER MD put me on an IV antibiotic drip and then both Cephalexin and SMZ/TMP DS tabs for 10 days, as she feared a massive infection. The lump has not dissolved at all in 10 days. The ulnar and radial pulses seem good.
Brief Answer:
may be due to trauma
Detailed Answer:
Hi
Thanks for your query.
Going by the nature of the swelling and the content of dried blood, it looks like a old hematoma (blood collection) to me. This could have been due to some unrecognized trauma.
But as there are some neurologic symptoms also, I would consider getting a MRI scan of the arm. This will give a better idea regarding the nature of the swelling and also if there is any nerve involvement.
Hope this helps. I will be available for further follow up.
