default
Posted on Wed, 31 May 2017
Question: I am having intermittent nausea that doesn't seem to be caused by anything or worsened/better by anything. When i become nauseous it seems to be coupled with a pain in my abdomen. However it is so high on my abdomen almost directly under my ribs. it is mild/moderate to my pain tolerance but it seems similar to food poisoning however up alot higher on my stomach then when i suffered food poisoning in the past. I have also not actually vomitted it only feels like i have to. I have no other symptoms, any ideas?

Brief Answer:
Heartburn.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for choosing HealthcareMagic for your query.

Most likely you are having severe Heartburn.Heartburn is an irritation of the esophagus that is caused by stomach acid. This can create a burning discomfort in the upper abdomen. Heartburn triggers differ from person to person, but most people have similar heartburn symptoms. A burning feeling in the chest just behind the breastbone that occurs after eating and lasts a few minutes to several hours. This feeling is accompanied with pain and nausea usually.
Heartburn is usually felt retrosternal as in your case.
Heartburn is actually a symptom of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease), and is caused by acid refluxing back into the esophagus. Risk factors include those that increase the production of acid in the stomach, as well as structural problems that allow acid reflux into the esophagus.

General advice are-
Eat a healthy diet.
Decrease your intake of fatty and spicy foods.
Chew your food properly.
Avoid caffeine and citrus fruits.
Avoid over-eating.
Drink lots of water.
Avoid smoking and alcohol.
Slightly elevate the head of your bed.

Along with it start taking proton pump inhibitor like Nexium 40 mg twice daily.Heartburn characterstically responds to proton pump inhibitors.

Start taking an antacid daily for few days along with nexium.
If still not relieved get a prescription for a prokinetic drug like Domperidon 30mg daily. This is very effective in treating acid reflux.

Hope i answered your query well.
