Suggest Treatment For Knee Pain
Question: I had knee surgery in Aug. 2014 and my Dr. prescribed tramadol HCL 50MG and Hydrocodon-acetaminophen 5-325. He also prescribed Hydrocodone-ibuprofen 7.5-200. I still have some pain in knee and back usually at night. I usually take one tramadol each night but not helping as much as it used to. So I wondered is it ok to take one Hydrocodone-Acetametaphen with the one tramadol OR one Hydrocodone-ibuprofen with the one Tramadol ? I have tried two Tramadols and that is too strong for me. I don't take any other pain killers all day. I have forgotten what my Dr. said was OK together. Please advise .Thanks!

Sure, fine, no problem. Hydrocodone and tramadol in small amounts aren't that bad together generally. If someone has previously tolerated a drug combination it makes it very likely the same combination will still work and not have adverse events if it didn't in the past. BUT hydrocodone PLUS hydrocodone PLUS tramadol is a new combination for you and is an additive combination of hydrocodone. That would not be a combination that would ever be recommended.
Then there are the larger questions of doctor's knowing what their patient is on and having good communication from their patient on what they are taking. Certainly a patient should never come up with their own combination of medicines. Certainly the expectaion of the doctor is that medicines are taken and not secreted into the back of the medicine chest for use later outside of the doctor's knowledge or intent. To summarize, if it is a previous combination the doctor ordered for a condition the doctor expected to come back, then it is under the doctor's supervision and reasonable. You should not just make up random handfulls of pills to mix together even if you get expert advice on it from Healthmagic.
