Suggest Treatment For Laryngitis

Posted on Mon, 27 Apr 2015
Question: Hello, I'm a 21 year-old male who's been suffering from a constant sore throat for 3 months now. It began as a usual minor cold, as I am singer I mistakenly practiced my singing while having the initial cold, and also had instances of shouting and other vocally strenuous activities that may have irritated my throat further. After a month the sore throat didn't leave and I visited my GP who tried a course of Amoxicillin. It didn't work and I ended up visiting an ENT who noted a "mild ertyhema of the interarytenoid mucosa around the larynx" and recommended Prilosec and nasal steroids for my deviated septum. The Prilosec caused some constipation, and as I am very thin with a light diet, plenty of fluid intake I didn't feel that I suffered from any kind of heartburn/acid issues. I discontinued the Prilosec after a few days. The nasal steroids did not improve the condition with my throat. Next my GP tried low dose Prednisone for five says, which did not work either. Currently I'm trying a total vocal rest, which I am nearly 2 weeks into. I have yet to note a difference. My throat still feels raw and sore. I'm just sort of wondering what I can possibly do next. Maybe a throat culture? Thanks for your thoughts. Not only can I not sing, but I can't even speak comfortably and my range is very limited, so it's beginning to cause some anxiety.

Brief Answer:
Seems to be laryngitis

Detailed Answer:

Hi,

I had gone through your question and understand your concerns that you are having sore throat with voice change. I would like to ask you few more details.

Is there any post nasal drip (nose or sinus secretions trickling back into throat ?

Kindly get back to me with the details.

As such, laryngitis (voice change) occurs with sinusitis, acid reflux, lung infection and voice abuse.

I suggest you to follow these measures to over come your throat issues.

1. absolute voice rest, steam inhalation, stop smoking, alcohol (if you are with these habits), cut down ghee and oily stuffs.

2. Re consult with your treating surgeon for evaluation of sinusitis and lung infection with x- ray chest, nasal endoscopy and throat swab for culture and sensitivity. Treatment can be started as per the findings.

3. Start prophylactic anti allergic medications (l-montus) citrizine + montelukast (best works for environment and food allergies) one tab at bed time with syrup mucaine gel 2teaspoons twice daily. (these medications needs medical prescription and need to be taken under medical supervision).

Hope this answers your question, if you have additional questions or follow up questions then please do not hesitate in writing to us. I will be happy to answer your questions.

Wishing you good health.

Thank you very much for your answer. I have not noticed any excessive nasal drip in my throat, as for the voice rest how long would you recommend? I am about 1.5 weeks silent currently.

As for sinusitis, my ENT did diagnose me with "chronic ethmoidal sinusitis" i think due to my deviated nasal septum. Thank you again for your time

Thanks again doctor. Just one last inquiry, do you have a specific suggestion for an antibiotic since Amoxicillin proved ineffective? I'll be sure to bring it up to my GP so he can prescribe it for me. Thank you, sorry if it's too many questions.
