Suggest Treatment For Low BP And Problem With Vagus Nerve Causing Blackouts

default
Posted on Fri, 12 Dec 2014
Question: I experienced the third incident of passing out and being hospitalized because my vegan nerve didn't work properly. My blood pressure dropped very low. Two of the times, I had just finished eating, and this last time, I had just gotten up from sitting for a period of time after eating. Why does the vegan nerve cause me to black out ? What causes this disorder ? What tests should I have to determine the cause ?
Thank you

Brief Answer:
ECG should show low heart rate.

Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Thanks for asking.
I am Dr. Prakash HM and I will be answering your query.

Based on your query, my opinion is as follows:

1. Vagus nerve is partially involved in lowering the heart rate. When it gets excessively stimulated, the heart rate lowers so much, that the blood pressure falls leading on to syncope.

2. Due to this hypotension and syncope, you are experiencing blackouts.

3. It could be "swallow syncope" or esophageal disorder, which stimulates the vagus nerve. Barium swallow will confirm, if any esophageal disorder is present or not.

4. Tests needed: ECG should demonstrate decreased heart rate. At present holter monitor should have showed abnormalities.

5. Anti-cholingergic medications will block vagal conduction and could be useful, if there is no pathology identified. Pacemaker might be necessary in future.

Hope it helps.
