Question: what causes a lump to grow on the back of my neck and is it dangerous? It is to the right of my spine. It causes no pain and I noticed it about 2 years ago. Size of about a nickel (rounded)

Brief Answer:
Lipoma or Sebaceous cysts are the most common.

Detailed Answer:
Hi.
Thanks for your query.

To recapitulate: Male/56 - 2 years h/o lump on the back of neck to the right of the spine - painless - size of nickel - wants to know whether this is dangerous...

Since the size of the lump has increased to only a nickel and no pain, this may not be dangerous.
The most probable causes of such a lump are:
- Lipoma: painless, moves around easily, free from skin and is always benign. Can be easily operated and removed in-toto.
- Sebaceous cyst: this too is painless unless gets infected. movable but restricted due to the duct attached to the skin which may e present as a black dot in the center and puckered on movement of the cyst. This too can be easily removed by Surgery.
These are usually a clinical diagnosis on actual examination by a General Surgeon and are operated for 2 reasons:
1. You get rid of the disease.
2. You get a histopathological diagnosis.

These two are not dangerous.
I hope this answer helps you, please feel free to ask for further queries if you feel that there is a gap for communication.

Is there danger in surgery since it it so close to the spine? It is movable and does not seem to be growing into a muscle.
Thank you. I have been avoiding this for too long.

Brief Answer:
No danger

Detailed Answer:
Thanks for your feedback.
There is no danger in surgery in spite it is close to the spine.
Better be done (operated) as it is going to grow over the period of time.
