Suggest Treatment For Lump On Lower Jaw After Tooth Extraction

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jan 2016
Question: Hi. I had my lower right wisdom tooth removed about 6 weeks ago. Last week a palpable lump appeared on my lower jaw between the extraction site and my chin and there was a lot of pain. That lump is now solid and very painful. It's the size of a large grape. I'm also getting a constant headache behind my right eye through to behind my right ear. The swelling in my face is very noticeable. I saw my dentist yesterday and he said it is cellulitis and it'll go on it's own. Having looked on various websites this afternoon I can't find that people with the same problem agreeing with that. Far from it. I'd be most grateful for any advice you could give me. I rinse with salt water after every meal. Thank you.

Brief Answer:
Abscess can be the reason of your symptoms.

Detailed Answer:
Hello!

Thank you for the query.

Wisdom tooth extraction is kind of serious procedure. It may cause tissues swelling and infection.
Lump which is painful can be enlarged lymph node, cyst or even an abscess. Strong pain is characteristic symptom of such abscess. You may have also night sweating and fever with this issue.
As from the mentioned area, to the brain is very close, infection should be taken seriously. The treatment must be intense.

In my opinion you should consult your doctor. Soft tissues ultrasound and teeth x-ray should be done at first. In case of doubts, CT is necessary.
Antibiotic treatment seems strongly advisable.

Hope this will help. Feel free to ask further questions.
Regards.

Hi

Many thanks for your swift reply. I went to my Dr this morning. She's put me on Metronidazole. If my symptoms get worse I'm to go to A&E. She wanted to send me there today, but I'm a professional organist with several engagements in the next few days and really can't be out of action until Christmas afternoon.

With best wishes for the festive season,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Metronidazole might be not enough.

Detailed Answer:
Metronidazole might be not enough. It kills only anaerobic bacteria. Much better antibiotic would be Clindamicine.

I hope you will get well soon. Best wishes.
