Question: I am addicted to watching porn and masturbation.It is causing a negative impact on my life.I was a bright and intelligent student in my school days.But during my college days I got interaction with people watching porn.They say its normal.From there onwards I came to know about masturbation.Although I got such feelings during my school days also but I was unaware of masturbation.Now after knowing about it I am addicted to it and causing huge destruction in my life and career.Please suggest me how to overcome this disease

It would have been better to mention about porn watching frequency (how many hours/Days per days/month) and masturbation frequency in query, to understand your suffering better.

Masturbation is considered as a part of normal human sexual behavior and it is very common among young males. Although porn watching is wrong but it is also common before marriage in your age group. It does not have any bad effects on health and does not lead to any medical problems.

Some people have many wrong ideas about masturbation - that it causes ill effects on health like nervous weakness, reduced energy, etc or sexual problems like impotence in the future. All this is not true and these are just myths and misconceptions.

Masturbation is not harmful for health and more than 80% man and woman masturbate in some point of the time. In present situation if you are not masturbating more than 4-7 times per week than there is no problem. If you are masturbating more even then it is not harmful but it is better to decrease the frequency of it.

Even past history of excessive masturbating does not affect patient condition, but if you have guilt then it can increase your worry, anxiety and tiredness.

So do not have any guilt after masturbation, take healthy diet and brisk walk daily for 30 minutes for symptomatic improvement.

thanks for the repsonse sir.You are saying 4-7 times as normal.Instead I do it maximum two times a week.But when I got feelings to do it, i waste my time.i.e., almost 3-4 hours watching porn.I masturbate while watching porn but I stop me to ejaculate as long as possible by stopping the activity for few minutes and then starting again.This makes me to watch porn for long hours and masturbate.At the end,I feel guilty as well as weakness.This weakness last for next day also.So please tell me whether this way of masturbating is correct or not.How much time to take for masturbation?Whether watching porn is necessary for masturbation?.

Socially watching porn is not advisable. But it will not lead to adverse effect on your health.

Duration of self stimulation or masturbation vary person to person. You are using stop and start technique to prolong it, which is also considered normal. So, do not worry.

Thanks for the valuable suggestions.So it means watching porn and masturbation is a normal activity.Your one sentence "Socially watching porn is not advisable" is what actually I want to talk about.I in my first mail said that I am very much addicted to watching porn.Although i restricted myself to watch it atmost 2 days a week but at all the times it keeps on running in my mind.It really cutoff my social life.I never ever talked to a girl, very shy nature guy,has very little interaction in social groupings.I dont feel myself normal when my colleagues meet and have social conversation.It seems this addiction has lead to that condition.I was preparing for Engineering services examination but this addiction has affected my preparation.So I want to quit this addiction and lead a normal healthy life. Thats what I want.Please help me Doc.

From further many things are clear in your case.

In your case, it is not porn watching which is affecting you more, but it is social anxiety and shyness which is causing problem in your life. Social anxiety affect most of the social interaction and concentration. Porn watching may be due to isolated behavior in your case, which will reduce after treating social anxiety.

For treatment you need to meet nearby psychiatrist. In drug treatment for long term relief most commonly SSRI (selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors) are used. SSRI takes around 3-4 weeks to show its effect. Non drug treatment like cognitive behaviour therapy (form of psychotherapy) also helpful which takes some weeks to show its effect.
