Suggest Treatment For Mild Chest Pain When Diagnosed With AFib

Question: After being diagnosed with a-fib, my doctor suggested I drop Toprol(50mg) from my bp meds. Until today, my bp was my normal below 120/80. Today, four days after dropping Toprol, the BP is now 157/98, after a day of light workout plus walking. I have had no alcohol or un-heart healthy foods or coffee. Intermittently I have had very slight chest pains, which likely were indigestion etc., which have been gone altogether for three hours. I have considered the emergency room but decided to continue to check my BP hourly, and monitor any pains. Obviously, if my BP goes up any further I will go to emergency. Should I resume the Toprol? At this point with no response, I guess this is a scam.................
Brief Answer:
Continue Toprol

Hi,
This is Dr Sameer Cardiologist from Fortis hospital.
Atrial fibrillation is a condition in which heart rate is irregular predisposing to clot formation in heart. This clot can travel to any part of body can cause stroke or loss of vision.
So it is very important for you to take Toprol (metoprolol) which helps in controlling the heart rate & bp. Blood thinner are important as they prevent clot formation.
If bp is persistently low(<120/80) you can decrease it to 25mg once daily

What are the side effects of nifedical. The cardiologist suggested I reduce Toprol to 25mg, and increase nifedical to 60mg, doubling the dosage.
Brief Answer:
Please refer to detailed answer
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I hope you are in good condition.
As i already suggested to decrease toprol if your bp is persistently low is logocal enough.
Coming to Nifedical which contains active ingredient Nifedipine. The most common side effect of this drugs are peripheral edema(swelling of feets), dizziness, light headedness & headache. It generally occur because of orthostatic hypotension (decrease in bp because of change in position from lying to standing). To reduce them get up slowly from lying or sitting to standing position.
Other side effects are nausea, constipation, leg cramps & gastritis.
I suggest you to continuously monitor your bp because as you said your bp remains on lower side, so doubling the dose of Nifedical may cause bp to decrease further.
Also if your AF is permanent than you also need a blood thinner (which i think you are not getting). This is required to prevent the clot formation which is very common in AF patients. So do remember to ask this with your cardiologist on follow up.
Hope you find this helpful.
Wishing you good health.

What are the side effects of xarelto?
Brief Answer:
Please see detailed answer
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome back.
Xarelto is a blood thinner. As i explained you earlier that AF can cause clot formation in heart which can further cause stroke & other occlusion of artery. Xarelto helps in preventing that.
Side effects are bleeding which can be minor or major. Minor bleeding can be from gums , etc. Major bleeding can be in gut or brain. But as it is a new medicine its bleeding tendency is very less.
Thus as prevention of clot formation is more important therefore this medicine is extremely important for you.
Hope i cleared your query.
If you have any further, I'll always be available.
