Suggest Treatment For Mild Degenerative Changes In The Medial Meniscus

Question: Oct 2012, had pain in left knee. When MRI done for it, report (attached in profile) says there is some degeneration in medial miniscus (posterior horn) and I was advised physiotherapy sessions. I have been undergoing physiotherapy for 3 months and have got lot of relief from the physiotherapy procedures and now I am continuing the exercises at home.

I still feel little bit of pain when I don't exercise for couple of days or when I stand for very long at one place (~ an hour). I need suggestion like shoul I go in for another continued sessions of physiotherapy or should I plan to get my knee operated (Arthoscopy)?

What are the long term after-affect of this problem, could it be Arthiritis or anything similar?

Brief Answer:
Surgery is needed right now.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
The mild degenerative changes in the medial meniscus does not usually need a surgical management. Since you felt better after physiotherapy you can continue with the exercises at home.
This should slowly subside with hot fomentation, proper relaxation and regular exercises to improve mobility of the joint.
A pair of elastic knee supports can add to stability. Avoid such activities as squatting, kneeling, heavy lifting, climbing, etc.
Adding glucosamine sulfate as supplement after consulting your orthopedician may help in relieving your symptoms.
In the long term if the degenerative changes keep on progressing this may end up in arthritis of the knee.
I hope this answers your query.
