Suggest Treatment For Mild Gastric Inflammation In Stomach
Question:
So I had an endoscopy today and everything seems fine.
I did have some mild gastric imflamation in my stomach. The Dr that can be caused by many things but said he routinely took two biopsies from the stomach. Also a biopsy from my duodenum (which also looked normal).
Is this normal to take biopsies and what are they checking for? I understand that H Pylori is a possibility. Aslo I've had a bit of an upset stomach the past two days, could that explain the gastric imflamation?
Thx again.

Brief Answer:
yes biopsy is routinely done
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Welcome to Healthcaremagic.
Yes while doing endoscopy routinely biopsy are taken from multiple sites though there is mild inflammation or no inflammation at all.
They have taken biopsy to rule out H pylori which is most common cause of this problem and seen in many. Without any obvious growth inside and at your age they won't be suspecting any other disease to take biopsy.
Many a times the stomach may appear normal and inside H pylori could be present.
Yes stomach upset do cause mild degree inflammatio which usually subscide by antacids .
Hope I have answered your query. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

Thanks you for your answer and help. I really appreciate it.
I understand that H Pylori can increase the risk of Gastric Cancer, yet is seems that half the worlds population has it. So should I be worried about that if i test positive for H Pylori?

Brief Answer:
no need to worry
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Yes, you are right, H pylori infection increases the risk and many have it.
No need to worry if it comes positive. If it comes positive you need to take H pylori eradication therapy. It is very efficient and kills H pylori completely. The risk increases if long term you have H Pylori infection and not taken treatment.
Once eradicated the chance of cancer is same as general population.

so if eradicated, even though I may have had it since a child and am 43 now, the risk would go? (as you can see I'm a bit of a worrier!)
Brief Answer:
Yes the risk reduce
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
I understand your concern. It is unlikely that you may be having it since childhood. Usually it gets infected in adult age or more.
Once eradicated the risk goes as right now you don't have any changes. And if any minor changes are there that will be shown in biopsy. If biopsy shows no pre cancer changes then no need to worry. From however long you had infection till now it has not caused any cancer change. If it is eradicated the risk goes off.
So I suggest you not to worry and wait till biopsy report come.
Hope I could reduce your worry to some extent. If any further queries are there I would love to help.

One last question - If there were pre cancer changes what does that mean? Does that mean actual cancer?
Brief Answer:
its not actual cancer
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
To tell you in simple way there are inflammatory change; non cancer changes; pre cancer changes and cancer changes.
Pre cancer changes are not actual cancer. They are one step before cancer develop. They don't have power to spread and all. They carry some risk to get converted to cancer if not treated. Not 100% risk. If treated there is no risk of cancer.
If pre cancer changes are seen then treatment becomes little more than just eradication of H pylori. I am unable to give more information based on the information you provided. That depends on the part of stomach involved.

I guess I'm jumping the gun as there are a few stages from nothing to cancer. The Dr said nothing looked suspicious so I guess pre cancer cells are not likely to occur right? I'm a bit obsessed with cancer :-/
Brief Answer:
less likely
Detailed Answer:
Hi,
Yes it is less likely that without having anything on the surface you develop pre cancer changes inside.
So don't worry.
