Suggest Treatment For Molluscum Contagiosum Infection On Face

Posted on Wed, 7 Oct 2015
Question: Hello Doc,

I am suffering from mollascum contagiosum on face since last 2 months.
I visited a skin specialist last month and he advised Ega cream.
Since last one month I have been applying Ega cream nightly but it’s not really helping.
New bumps are appearing on unaffected areas of my face.

I have read on the internet that no treatment is required for it and bumps go away on their own.
But some treatment can be given for speedy recovery.
Can you please advise here.

One more concern I have is that I have a 10 months old baby in my home.
Can she get it from me? What precautions should be taken?

Thanks,
XXXX

Brief Answer:
Molluscum can be either ablated Or you may use Imiquimod5% cream once daily

Detailed Answer:
Hello. Thank you for writing to us.

I have gone through your query and I have noted down your concern.

Molluscum contagiosum is caused by a virus, Molluscum Contagiosum Virus.
Lesions commonly present as asymptomatic, pearly white, dome shaped lesions with some of them showing central umblication.
It can spread by autoinnoculation e.g shaving ma facilitate spread in males. It can also be passed on to other family members including children through skin to skin contact or through common pillows, bedsheets, towels, hankerchiefs etc therefore treatment is often sought by 2 or sometimes more affected members in family. Personal use items should be separate to reduce the chances of spread.
Nevertheless, Molluscum is not a serious disease by itself and may resolve on its own.
Lesions of Molluscum contagiosum can be ablated either with Electrocautery Or Radiofrequency cautery Or Co 2 Laser. This is the quickest mode of treatment as all lesions can be ablated in a single treatment session.
Alternatively patients also have an option of using topical imiquimod 5% cream once daily at night; response may take 3-4 weeks.
