Brief Answer: he will get better with this drug, dont worry Detailed Answer: hello and welcome to hcm! The symptoms of your son which you have mentioned need medicines. It looks like psychosis and he also have ADHD. It is quite commonly seen that people with untreated adhd develop psyhosis. Now regarding the age of your son- he is 18yrs. I want to tell you that the onset of most of psychotic illnesses is in early teens or early adulthood only, the same age in which your son is having it. So, it is not unusual presentation. The drug sizodon is one of the most commonly prescribed first line treatment medicine in psychosis. It is consedered to be quite safe and very effective at the same time. There are some side effects but almost none of them is serious or long lasting. Moreover, by regularly keeping in touch with a psychiatrist one can detect any side effect at early stae and manage it. The side effect also depends on the dosage of sizodon used. It is almost none in low dose ; and low doses are best to start with - as it is quite a potent drug. Please do not fear so much, he needs treatment and the choice is appropriate. Hope the reply is useful for you. please feel free to ask more questions for clarification. Wish you good luck. Brief Answer: giving meds will be more useful for him Detailed Answer: Hello, Firstly, i would never advice any such patient to be kept in hostel. Presently he should be kept under supervision of a trutvworthy family memeber preffrably. Also that when treatment is started there will be a significant improvement in his anger outbursts and irritability. These all will reduce and stop. So, he will not create so much problems. Secondly, he wil be able to study when there is improvement in his mood and concentration.Yes, there is a great difference in performance when the medication is strated. So, you can fairly rely on this thing that with response in his behaviou - his studies will also gradually get better. Thirdly, your doctor has said the right thing that at present he cannot follow any councelling sessions. it will be waste of time , money and effort altogether. There is a suitable time for everything. And at present he needs meds. fourthly, what you desire is very nice on your part being his father & very much understandable that you want to wait and watch if he gets better on his own in few years--- but i want to say that he is 18now and these 2-4 years are very crucial for his studies and carrier. So, it is better to be quick and follow.medical advice. A doctor just wants his patienst's well being. you may take advice form some another expert if you feel like. So, please move forward in managing your child. This will be my sincere advice. Hope this helps your queries. Please feel free to ask.more questions if you have Dr. Manisha Gopal MD Psychiatry
