Suggest Treatment For Mycoplasma Pneumonia
Question: I (healthy woman of 61) was just diagnosed with Mycoplasma Pneumonia. I have been visiting with my 95 year old mother, and I'm VERY worried that I have infected her. She is currently on Ceptriaxone/Rocephin (1 gram x 5 more days) for a UTI. Would this cover her for any exposure to Myoplasma Pneumonia? Or should she get a new antibiotic?
Brief Answer:
Ceftriaxone doesn't act on Mycoplasma. She doesn't need a bew antibiotic!
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thanks so much for this query.
Am not convinced you infected your mother. If this were how easily infections were transmitted, believe me almost everyone would have been sick. Though ceftriaxone doesn't act on mycoplasma, I don't see the need for another antibiotic at this time. If she however starts with symptoms of a lung infection like cough and fever, only then will I recommend an antibiotic. For now, NO additional drug is required.
I hope this helps. I wish you well.
