Suggest Treatment For Nasal Congestion While On Nasivion In An Infant
Question: Hi Doctor,
My newborn is 15 days old and suffering from blocked nose for past 2 days. I took her to the doctor who prescribed nasal drops nasivion. Now since yesterday she is also coughing mainly during night and having difficulty sleeping. My elder daughter who is 2 years 8 months is down with whooping cough and is on antibiotics for last 3 days. We are taking all precautions to keep her away from the new born. I am very much worried. Please tell me what should I do?

Hi.... at this very young age you should be using only saline nasal drops for the baby. Please do not use any other anti allergic are anticough medications in this age group. None of the medicines are licenced to be given for a 15 day old kid.
Coming to the cough actually speaking it is a protective reflex and this is the way in which the mucus will be brought up from the lungs. The kids less than 5 years will not know to spit it out, they will swallow and it will come out as vomiting or motion.
Another issue is regarding whooping cough in the older sibling. Actually antibiotic given to the kid with whooping cough is not for that kid herself, it is to prevent the spread of the organism to other kids in the family and the vicinity. So you need not use any antibiotic for your younger one also again.
