Suggest Treatment For Numbness In Leg, Asthma, Chronic Allergies And Sleeplessness

Posted on Fri, 13 Mar 2015
Question: My son was stung in the leg by a wasp in 2007. That same year he developed year round allergies and asthma. About a year later, he has experienced numbness in that same leg which seems to occur frequently. The sting did have an allergic reaction, as a large purplelish area developed on that leg after the sting. I took him to a doctor and he gave him antibiotics. Could his allergies/asthma, and leg numbness be related to the wasp sting? If so, what can be done to alleviate this. (He's on allergy meds, over the counter & prescription, but it doesn't work. He suffers from mucus flareups that prevent him from sleeping. Some nights he has an all-nighter and he has to nap during the day. He really doesn't have much of a life as he cannot enjoy anything due to chronic allergies and sleeplessness. What can we do? Please help.

Brief Answer:
Asthma/allergic reaction unrelated with wasp bite

Detailed Answer:
Hi
Welcome to Healthcare-Magic
Greetings of the day

Dear Sir,

His numbness in legs, asthma and allergies are unrelated to the wasp bite. Wasp bite leads to Type 1 Hypersensitivity reaction and usually resolves with medication . It does not predispose to asthma and other allergic reactions.

As you son has been having recurrent allergic reaction and asthma , I would suggest the following

1. Consultation with Immunologist

2. Intradermal skin testing to finf out possible allergen causing the reaction

3. Himalaya Septilin Syrup can be used to boost immunity

4. XXXXXXX Gooseberry which is richest source of Vitamin C will also help boost immunity. Commercial preparation containing Gooseberry like Chyawanprash can be used.

5. Thorough clinical examination by Surgeon to know cause for numbness in leg.

My son has been to an ENT (ear, nose, throat) specialist a few years ago and was told he has a few nasal polyps, but they did not need to be removed. Online reading shows polyps cause all my son's allergy problems (post-nasal drip, sinus congestion, etc.) He also went to a allergist a few years ago, and confirmed that he has the usual allergies (dust, pollen, ragweed, etc) He did not want to give him allergy shots because of the steroids (My son is a type 1 diabetic). The allergist said that steroids could be fatal, so that is not an option. His regular doctor prescribed an allergy spray that contained steroids, but it produced nose-bleeds. So, what else can we do. Please respond soon.
Thank you, XXXX

Brief Answer:
Consider Surgical removal of polyps

Detailed Answer:
Dear Sir

Nasal polyps result from dust and allergy. Presence of nasal polyps worsens prexisting allergic condition.
In presence of allergy and asthma , Surgical removal of polyps will provide the much needed relief. I would suggest you to reconsult ENT Surgeon and discuss this. Steroids will only be helpful during acute exacerbation of asthma /steroid. Long term use should be avoided especially if the individual is Diabetic.
