default
Posted on Fri, 28 Oct 2016
Question: How can I treat a big toe that has Osteoarthritis at home? It is swollen and stiff. I have Duexis from a back injury, but have not been taking it but maybe once a day. Also, how can I treat a possible Achilles Tendon injury that gives me mild pain, and is more painful when I walk a lot or when I go up & down steps.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Thank you for using HCM to post your health query.
I read carefully your question and I understand your concern.

The way to treat both the osteoarthritis at the big toe and the Achilles tendon, it is to use a pain killer and an anti-inflammatory drug that will help with the pain but also will lower the inflammation in the tissues. Duexis its a good medicine, but you need to use it 2-3 times/day (if you are less then 60kg do not use it more then 2 times/day). Use it after food, and for 2 weeks regularly, because the healing process needs time.

The Achilles tendon will need more time to heal (4-6 weeks). You can apply analgesic cream, by massaging the toe join and the around tendon area 3-4 times/day.

Also, applying ice or heat helps- whichever of them feels better.

Keep the joints moving passively, with your hand and keeping the range or motion. But, try to not walk in long distance, or overuse your foot. It is like a open wound that we scratch on it and make it worse every time. So give it time to heal if possible.

Try not wearing high heels, or tight shoes, that may affect the osteoarthritis.

If there is instability in the ankle, then you need to see an orthopedist, who will need to run an MRI to see how big it is the damage in the Achilles tendon. Sometimes, if there is rupture of the most part of it, surgery may be needed.

Hope this is helpful.
