Suggest Treatment For Osteolysis In Joint
Question: I have a grade 2 Ac sprain which left me with a bump, and was told I developed OSTEOLYSIS in the joint. I was told I need the surgery that shaves off the tip of bone at the joint. The Mumford procedure. I was wondering if this would also help to reduce the bump from my Ac Separation? I am young and fit, the bump has really bothered me since I got it.
Brief Answer:
Yes The bump will be surgically excised
Detailed Answer:
Hi there.
Thanks for the query.
Yes, The Mumford procedure will surgically excise the part of the clavicle which is causing the bump. But this shall render the AC joint a bit unstable for which additional possible tightrope surgery may need to be done.
Your Surgeon shall assess the degree of instability and then decide whether to carry out an additional tightrope procedure or not.
I hope I have answered your query.
I will be available to answer your follow up queries.

Ok thank you very much. That is a relief, however I did not expect a possibility of tightrope surgery since it is only a grade 2. Is that common?
Brief Answer:
Increased chance of instability if lateral end of clavicle is excised
Detailed Answer:
As I said earlier, excision of the lateral end of clavicle, may result in some more instability. And tightrope procedure or other equivalent survey may need to be done to restore stability.

I was competing in powerlifting before my accident. Do you think that after the procedure and after the rehab process, would I be able to eventually lift heavy weights again? For reference I deadlift 500, bench 315, and squat 400
Brief Answer:
Heavy impact on weight lifting
Detailed Answer:
Without stabilising the AC joint you won't be able to lift heavy weights especially after Mumford procedure. Kindly discuss this with your Surgeon and the options to reconstruct a functional AC joint clavicle complex.

Is the tight rope considered the best procedure to help stabilize the joint?Do you think that if I have the tight rope or something similar to stabilize the joint. Maybee I will be able to continue powerlifting later in life. I am still in my 20's.
Brief Answer:
Many procedures exist and will depend on the amount of Bone resected
Detailed Answer:
Tightrope procedure can be considered, though it will depend highly on the Surgeon's preference and the amount of Bone that is removed during the Mumford procedure.
Depending on that, your Surgeon will take a call on the methods he prefers to stabilize the distal third clavicle and AC joint. Once this is done, your shall be able to resume weight lifting after a period of rehabilitation.
