Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

Welcome to Healthcare Magic.

Thanks for the query.

Osteoporosis is defined when the DEXA Scan T score is more than - 2.5 SD. In your mother's case it is - 2.8,hence fulfilling the diagnosis of Osteoporosis.

Since she is 69 years old, she is suffering from Post menopausal osteoporosis, making her prone to develop wrist Fractures and spine Fractures with minimal trauma.

The bone mass is decreased and hence the bones become weak to support weight and can collapse. She needs certain medication like Bisphosphonates, Calcium, Vitamin D. These medication should be started once her Serum Calcium and Vitamin D levels are assessed, also liver and kidney function need to be assessed. Bisphosphonates like Alendronate and Zoledronic acid are very useful in replenishing the bone mass and reducing the risk for Fractures.

She needs to eat a diet rich in Calcium and Vitamin D to maintain the normal daily requirement. Eat food like eggs, yoghurt, pulses, chicken, lean meat. Avoid smoking and alcohol, Steroid use as these can aggravate or cause secondary osteoporosis. Avoid immobility. She needs to walk around and keep active to avoid further weakening of the bones. Keep her well hydrated with 1 to 2 litres of water daily. If she needs, she must use support to walk, like a walking cane or Walker. Of she has decreased vision she needs to get that treated, as these can increase chances of falling and increased risk of Fractures and morbidity and mortality.

Kindly get a consult with an Endocrinologist to help relate her Diabetes and Osteoporosis as this is of prime importance.

She may need medication for many years to prevent Fractures.

I hope I have answered your query.

I will be available to answer your follow up queries.
