Suggest Treatment For Pain Around Belly Button

Posted on Tue, 14 Apr 2015
Question: Had some pain around belly button area today, thought it was from jeans rubbing (not tight). Getting undressed tonight, noticed belly button is scarlet into the center and painful to the touch. Red ring around outside. Could it be a fungal or bacterial infection and do you suggest I see a doctor? Or have a wait and see? No discharge. No piercing.

The redness looked a little better this morning but when I got up and walked around and then after the shower it seemed worse. I have an antibacterial ointment on it covered by a bandaid. Should I see how it is the morning?

Brief Answer:
Bacterial infection of belly button: Various suggestions.

Detailed Answer:
Welcome back and thanks for your follow up with picture.

After analyzing the picture I can confirm the bacterial infection at the area. You can wait for next 12-24 hours and if pain with redness increases then can meet a doctor for the same. There are certain suggestions below:

-Apply over the counter antibacterial cream for two times a day.

- Do not occlude the area with band-aid as can cause more sweating and increase in the redness with pain.

- Wear lose cotton clothes and cotton undergarments so that there should not be any friction over the area.

-Do not scratch or rub the skin as it can lead to further aggravation.

For the time being period you can take an anti-inflammatory tablet such as paracetamol or diclofenac or ibuprofen to reduce the pain.

I hope this information will help you. If you have further queries I will be happy to help.

Using bacitracin. Belly button less red, but appearance of some white "threads" after using 2 times. Not true or thick discharge. Could it be from the ointment? Been keeping it uncovered like you suggested? Neosporin causes blisters when I use that, and I am allergic to bactrim. What do you suggest? No odor or itching but mild pain.

Brief Answer:
Apply least amount of cream. Maitain hygiene.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,

Welcome back and thanks a lot for your further follow up.

The white thread like appearance at belly button could be due to the bit more amount of cream. In my patients I suggest to take just a quarter of pea size amount that too to be spread evenly. It should be such a least amount that the cream should not be visible by naked eye.

You can continue to use bacitracin. If you are sensitive to neosporin or bactrim then should not use the same.

As there is no itching or odor with just mild pain so you can keep observing the area.

Follow all the suggestions as guided before in previous mail and maintain hygiene.
