Suggest Treatment For Pain In The Wrist And Elbow After A Minor Injury

default

Question: Hi sir,

I had a minor bike accident about a week ago. My right hand got kind of stiff after that and there was pain on moving the hand the day after. Later with some exercising it became better and I can now move the hand however there is still some pain in the elbow. Yet I can't lift anything beyond about 1kg weight, there is just not enough force in the hand. I also noticed a sore area in the elbow.

Is this okay? Or should I go for an X-ray or consultation?

Brief Answer:
Soft tissue injury likely.

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
A sore area in the wrist and elbow after a minor injury with no major persistent pain is likely to be due to mild soft tissue injury or a sprain. It will take around 2 weeks to heal with proper rest. You need to avoid all painful movements. In the meanwhile, for symptomatic relief:
1. Give enough rest to your hand muscle.
2. Take mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen.
3. Stronger prescription NSAIDS with muscle relaxants may help if simple analgesics do not help.
4. Hot compresses to your arm and elbow will be useful pain relieving measure. You may apply a local analgesic gel on that area.
5. Wrist and forearm stretches can be helpful under the guidance of a physiotherapist.
You can apply a crepe bandage or elastic brace for support to the injured area. X-ray is needed if there is a visible swelling and extreme pain on any specific movement.
I hope this answers your query.
