Posted on Thu, 18 Feb 2016
Question: I was playing in a basketball game yesterday and as the game went on my wrist hurt worse and worse even though I could not think of one specific time where I hurt it. This morning I woke up and it hurt worse. The pain is on the pinky side of my wrist. It worst when I bend my wrist back or rotate my forearm counter clockwise. The joint in my wrist has also been cracking when I move it. What could this be?

Brief Answer:
Considerations

Detailed Answer:
hello and thank you for sending the question.

It sounds like you have developed some inflammation or tendinitis in your wrist. This may have happened from some of the stress that was placed on your wrist during the basketball game.

While you do not remember a specific injury during the game it may have been related to repetitive flexion and extension of the wrist during the exercise of playing basketball.

I would recommend that you start an anti-inflammatory med like ibuprofen. You can take 600 mg three times per day. You might try this for five or six days. I would expect the symptoms to slowly improve over time.

You might consider stretching your wrist prior to playing basketball next time and this might decrease the likelihood that you develop a recurrent problem.

thank you again for sending your question.
