Suggest Treatment For Pain Radiating From Hip To Thigh

Question: I have pain in my left hip the goes down the outside of my thigh and actually feels like the tendon snaps when I turn over at night. It also wakes me up if I'm laying on that side to long. When I walk I have pain from my hip that also hurts in the crease of my leg towards groin area. Then I also have tenderness on my left side up to my rib cage. It does go away completely then comes back. I've had my hips xrayed and just a slight bit of arthritis was present. I'm very active and work 7 days a week walking dogs and taking care of animals. Could this be a strain?

Brief Answer:
Iliotibial band friction syndrome

Detailed Answer:
Hi there.

You seem to be having Snapping Iliotibial band syndrome.

It can occur if you walk or run more than your body can take. Also wrong foot positioning in pronation on walking can cause the same. So the walking could be a strain. The groin pain could be associated muscle strain.

You can apply ice or hot packs, use a knee cap, avoid long distance walking or running or difficult terrain. Take pain killer like Tablet Ibuprofen 400mg twice a day for 5 days after meals. Also take Tablet Ranitidine 150mg twice a day, half an hour before meals for 5 days.

Strengthen your hips and thigh muscles by regular exercise.

I hope I have answered your query.

Thank you! That's exactly what I do as far as being ( dragged) down the street by strong dogs and crawling around looking for cats. Do you think that can cause a discomfort below my rib cage as well? Does the band effect that area too?

Brief Answer:
Need to take precautions

Detailed Answer:
Yes, Strenuous activity in uncomfortable posture can cause muscular spasm and pain in that region as well. Do rest for a week. Apply hot packs. Change your walking terrain if it is difficult to negotiate.
