Question : On Thursday after playing 9 holes of golf, walking & in shorts, a golf ball size knot appeared on my lower shin just above my right ankle. It was huge. I didn't hit it on anything, it just appeared. I took a shower and within an hour it had gone down. It's still a little painful and is just a small lump now. Any ides of what this might be? Thanks

From description it seems to be soft tissue injury . Knot might be due to haematoma formation(collection of blood).
I suggest you to consult an orthopaedician nearby for a detailed examination. You may get the X-ray of the area affected under his/her guidance.
Beside icing and elevating it, you can take anti-inflammatory drug like motrin to reduce pain and inflammation.
