Posted on Thu, 19 Nov 2015
Question: My husband had a little node under his chin that he has complained about or a couple of days. We thought may be he had a little pimple forming but tonight he came home from work and the area is really swollen and there is pus coming out of several areas now. Is this an emergency situation or can we wait to get him to our PC doc in the morning?

Brief Answer:
should be able to wait unless immune system compromised

Detailed Answer:
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

It is likely that he has an abscess which is a localized painful collection of pus.

He should be able to wait until the am unless he has a history of a compromised immune system (eg (1) diabetic,(2) immune disease, (3)on medication suppressing immune system like steroids, azathioprine (4) on chemotherapy etc)

In addition to the warm compresses which would encourage drainage and also reduce the swelling somewhat, he may want to use anti inflammatory pain killers Eg naproxen, cataflam, ibuprofen

One of these may help with the swelling as well.

When he sees his doctor in the morning, it is likely that the abscess would be drained and antibiotics prescribed.

I hopes this helps, feel free to ask any other questions
