Suggest Treatment For Painful Swelling In Foot While Having Gout

Question: I have been taking anti inflammatory drug for almost 1 week and am told I have gout. The pain has subsided but the foot/toe is still swollen. I have rested my foot during this time. What can I do to get better as I am a very active person.

I am Dr.Muhammad Ahmad. I have read your question completely, i understand your concern and will try to help you in best way possible.

Gout does take some time to get better it may take 15-20 days in some cases to get better, depemding upon severity and patient's response to medication.

You are already showing response it's a good sign but in my opinion you will need to wait more to get better.

Here are a few suggestions you can follow to get better sooner.

1) Take good rest to effected joints.
2) Do cold compresses of the area.
3) Keep taking anti inflammatory drugs suggested by dr , till the doctor asks you to stop them.
4) Do not take any medication that raises level of uric acid in the body.
5) Most important plan of management is keeping a safe food habit.
6) DO NOT use foods which increases uric acid levels in the body, like green leafy vegetables, red meat and pulses.( You can see the list of foods you should avoid on the internet easily)

Following these suggestions can get your joints healing faster.

Thank you for your detailed response. But should a blood test not be done to check for Uric acid level and then a medicine prescribed to lower it, which medication may be only necessary for a short period of time?

Indeed a test can be done , it is simple serum uric acid level test.. and if it is high one can start using a uric acid lowering drug. In some health systems tests can be performed without referral if that is possible for you, you can get it done.

Otherwise discuss with your doctor about getting the test done.

NSAIDS are usually used for acute attacks, to lower uric acid fubuxostat or allopurinol is used.
