Suggest Treatment For Persistent Headache In An Elderly Person

default
Posted on Tue, 12 Jul 2016
Question: I've had flu like symptoms, all over aches and a headache for 5 days, but no fever, no cold. I never get headaches but this one is constant, not severe with some tenderness around temples and eyes. I am a healthy 64.8 yrs. old female in excellent health except for controlled high blood pressure.

Detailed Answer:
Hello and Welcome

I appreciate your concern

Based on your description, empiric treatment for headache should be given before going for extensive workup. Ibuprofen in combination with pseudoephedrine can be advised for the headache. Metoclopramide or domeperidone would also aid in a quicker recovery. If such episodes recur frequently then naproxen with sumatriptan can be considered as the headache aborting combination.

If despite these measures the headache persists or worsens then an ER consultation would be required to assess for other causes or advise brain imaging. But based on your history and description of gradual onset of headache I don't think that would be necessary.

Wishing you best of health

Thanks
