Question: I have a 2cm pineal cyst. It is not touching or obstructing anything. But I have developed insomnia. Could the cyst cause that?

Brief Answer:
Unlikely to be related

Detailed Answer:
Hi,

Thank you for posting your query.

I have noted your symptoms of insomnia and pineal cyst on the scan.

The two are unlikely to be related.

Cysts in the pineal gland are incidentally found on MRI or CT scans done for evaluating headaches or other problems. They can be left alone.

Insomnia is unrelated to pineal cyst, and can be separately treated.

I hope my reply has helped you.

I would be pleased to answer, if you have any follow up queries or if you require any further information.

Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (2 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Pineal cyst does not affect melatonin.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

I agree that pineal gland secretes melatonin hormone, however, melatonin secretion is usually not affected due to pineal cysts. The levels of melatonin is normal in patients with pineal cysts.

So, any effect on sleep is unlikely due to pineal cyst.

Do these type of cysts grow

Answered by Dr. Sudhir Kumar (5 minutes later)
Brief Answer:
Not usually.

Detailed Answer:
Thank you for getting back.

These cysts usually do not grow. I have seen about 200 patients with pineal cysts, and non of them grew.

I usually ask them to repeat an MRI brain after 6-12 months and review them.
