Suggest Treatment For Postpartum Thyrotoxicosis
2 years ago I started having irregular heart beats and had to go to ER. I was having excessive PVC's and they admitted me overnight. At that time my cardiologist says that all my tests are normal and that structrually I have a perfect heart. He prescribed propranalol 20 mg BID. However, I still feel it quite a lot.
I had routine blood work 7 days ago. It came back positive for hyperthyroidism and I am scheduled for scans, US, and was given atenalol for fast heart rate. My real problem is the arrythmia, flopping fish feeling, possible PVC's. Is atenalol or propranalol better for PVC's or feelings of arrythmia?
The best treatment to control palpitations in your case is Atenolol.
Detailed Answer:
Hi and thank you for asking!
I read your query and understood your concerns.
Thyrotoxicosis and hyperthyroidism is causing you palpitations, tachycardia and PVCs. The treatment of choice in these cases is to start a betablocker, although betablockers treat the symptoms but not the cause. Only a complete thyroid examinations and treatment (of hyperthyroidism) will completely stabilize your heart and symptoms.
My opinion is that the best treatment to control palpitations in your case is Atenolol which is a beta 1 selective betablockers and has the same effectiveness in controlling palpitation and PVCs with less side effect (if it is compared with propanolol which is a non selective betablockers).
Hope this was of help!
Wish you health!
