Question: I started taking humira for psoriasis January 2014. I have to take regular blood test. My last blood test showed slightly high alkaline phosph 108 and ast/sgot 50 and alt/sgpt 53. I took another blood test 2 weeks ago and nurse took from hand. It was very painful and the next morning my hand was swollen it was huge. The swelling moves around to my other hand my wrists but not all at the same time. It is painful and sometimes gets pink and warm. I have no fever. Should I be taking ibuprofen, icing the area, or heat? Please help me get rid of this? I have to get another blood test in 2 weeks and now I am scared. Thank you, XXXXXXX L.

Brief Answer:
Use heat and ibuprofen

Detailed Answer:
Hello,
Thanks for posting your query.
From your description it seems that you have developed superficial thrombophlebitis as a result of the needle inserted. It is inflammation of the superficial veins of the hand. For relief of your symptoms, you can follow some simple measures like-
* Apply moist heat to reduce inflammation and pain
* Keep pressure off of the area to reduce pain and decrease the risk of further damage
* Raise the affected area to reduce swelling.
You can have mild pain killers like acetaminophen or ibuprofen for pain and inflammation. Applying thrombophob ointment locally will also help to reduce the swelling.
If you develop fever, intense pain or the swelling spreads further proximally then it indicates infection and spreading of the venous clot in which case you need to consult your physician immediately.
I hope this answers your query.

Why does swelling keep moving around? Shot was given in right hand but today its o.k. and swelling is in the left hand. It just goes back and forth to each arm and in different areas. The hand I got shot from the palm is sore and I have trouble opening middle finger all the way? Thank you, XXXXXXX L.

Brief Answer:
Due to inflammation.

Detailed Answer:
Hello.
Thanks for writing again.
The change in swelling from one arm to the other is likely to be due to inflammation- Can be psoriatic arthritis. It can be relieved with hot fomentation and ibuprofen.
The trouble in opening the middle finger can be due to tendonitis- inflammation of the tendon due to injury. Again a hot compress will help.
Hope my answer is helpful.
